Did it work for you as well?.. |
Nope... It semi-worked. It crashes when I use Totem w/ESD on in GNOME.
Totem is using the Xine back-end and the GSTreamer "ESDSINK" (in gconf) .. but I really doubt that has much to do with it.
I'm running 2.6.0-test6-mm4 for now until the problem gets settled out. |

Same here... It worked on most stuff.. but when I was watching a C-SPAN stream on Mplayer, and closed it.. It just stalled, and crashed the ALSA driver..
So what I did is I moved the sound folder from the test7 version, into the test8, and im going to test it out now.. see if it works for you also?..
I think the problem with test8 is that ALSA cvs was used as the driver..
Im not sure what version was used in test7 though.

I think I might of had the problem with test7, I can't remember.
It's probaly possible to not compile the modules in the kernel and just use Portage's Alsa-Driver and compile that. |

Nope. alsa-driver in portage is based off the old 2.4 sound code, and trying to compile it against 2.6 will fail quite miserably.
Edit: I stand corrected, it does work, although I swear it didn't last I tried. |

I just switched over to this the other day and whenever I try to mount a cd I get a kernel panic and the system completely locks up. I have to hit the reset button to restart my computer. This also happened with the other two previous tests versions. I can mount CDs fine on 2.4. I keep hoping the new test version will fix it |

I'm finding that I am unable to use sound for an extended period of time. I'm using the intel8x0 sound module with an nforce2 board. If I start up XMMS it'll play fine for as long as I don't start up another application that wants to play sound. If I do start such an app, like Firebird (why it's trying to play sound, I don't know - I've disabled flash), then XMMS will freeze up when trying to switch songs.
I'm getting the following in .xsession-errors, which I assume is from Firebird:
Code: | ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1055:(snd_pcm_hw_open) open /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p failed: Device or resource busy |
The output of lsof after getting into this state is: Code: | # lsof | grep sound

I don't know if the patch mentioned earlier in this thread would work - I can't access it (tried copying & pasting). I'll switch back to one of the test7 sources to see if this problem was there as well.
edit Went back as far as test6 and found the same behavior I have found that if esd is started, firebird will use that preventing the blocking errors (for firebird, at least). Also, it seems that firebird uses sound for type-ahead (even if type-ahead sound is disabled via about:config). |

The nforce2 sound does not support hardware mixing, meaning you can only have one sound playing at a time. I suggest you go buy a SB Audigy or Live! card, or you can try and use esound or arts to get software mixing and get more then one sound. |

I kinda figured as much, but shouldn't an open request of an already open sound device result in a "device busy"/access denied event? Why is mozilla keeping libasound open, which I presume is blocking subsequent access to the sound system by other resources?
It's not just firebird. If I try to play an ogg with ogg123 while XMMS is playing, I get the access denied error, but ogg123 never exits. XMMS hangs when it tries to skip to the next song in the playlist & all sound is blocked until reboot. |

Which doesn't work for me at all. It just spews kernel panic garbage to the console on boot. First time that's happened, and I've been copying my .config and running make oldconfig since test4 with no problems. |

never one to shy away from a kernel-panic challenge, I just now built mm1 and am posting from it with no problems...guess it could just be certain config options are hosed in this release?

I also get the console junk/kernel panic with mm1. Vanilla test8 works fine for me: Code: | # uname -a
Linux strom 2.6.0-test8 #3 Mon Oct 20 08:57:43 EDT 2003 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux |
Running on nforce2 with an HP GeForce4 MX that I'm trying to run in frame buffer mode (vga = 794). |

from reading lkml, it sounds like there are some fb issues in test8-mm1.
(I don't use framebuffer, prolly why I didn't have any problems...) _________________ I've got the brain, I'm insane, you can't stop the power |

I'm also getting this panic on boot. I use framebuffer. I'll try compiling without and see what happens.
*EDIT* mm1 boots fine with framebuffer disabled. |

I just booted 2.6.0-test8-mm1 that I compiled from kernel.org sources and mm1 patch .Everything works great- gkrellm sensors, alsa, glxgears gives 8000+FPS, wheel mouse, mplayer, and even frame buffer works for first time. I've got 12 test kernels on this box, and this is the most responsive and fastest yet.All progs seem fine so far.
I also edit my makefile on all kernel compiles, and add these flags in two places in addition to the flags already there:
-02 -march=athlon-xp -falign-functions=16 -falign-loops=16 -falign-jumps=16 -falign-labels=1 -fomit-frame-pointer
I've never had a problem in at least 50 2.4 and 2.6 kernels using these flags.

Does anyone else have/had this problem...?
Beginning with test7 I think my USB mouse doesn't get into /dev/input/mouse0 anymore. Using test8-mm1 solved the problem at first, but now, after a few reboots, it's the same again! There are also no entries in /dev/usb/hid. I can see that the kernel loads all the correct modules and detects my peripherals. Don't know why it worked the first boots and now can't get it to work anymore. Also compiling USB as modules doesn't help. I do have an nforce2 board.Could this be a kernel bug or is something wrong on my side?
Thanks!
Steve
EDIT: Suddenly using modules it works again. Don't know where to problem is...probably a minor kernel bug. |

that's my issue the part in "processor type and features" where it says
"Subarchitecture Type (fill in here) " --- my words of course --- i choose PC-Compatible and i get an error on this over and over again. Anyone have any clues as to why? I emerged it the first time, then dl'd it from kernel.org.

I have the same problem as stefanwa. My usb mouse doesn't work. I compiled this kernel myself so is there anything special I should be compiling in in order to get usb mice to work in X?
I've tried the following drivers in my XF86Config-4 file:
/dev/usbmouse
/dev/mouse
/dev/input/mice
Thanks for any advice! _________________ "...classes will dull your mind; destroy the opportunity for orginal creativity." |
