I have a big probleme on one of my computer. I can acces it with my user login, and it s look to work nice.

But, if I type su :

~ $ su
Password:
configuration error - unknown item 'FAILLOG_ENAB' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'LASTLOG_ENAB' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'MOTD_FILE' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'FTMP_FILE' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'ENV_ROOTPATH' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'PASS_MIN_LEN' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'CHFN_AUTH' (notify administrator)

The system never log me in, without msg like bad password, etc. This is the same thing if I try to log in with root acces on tty1.

When I look to dmesg, I see nothing about trying to log root acces.

This is an old version of gentoo on it, I want to update im, but without root acces ... I cannot do anythig :(

You'll probably have to use an install cd or LiveCD to get in as root. Follow the installation guide (skip the partitioning and formatting parts) to get your system mounted and chroot into it. Once you've chrooted, you can do whatever you need to do as far as updating, or you can try to figure out and fix the problem and use your normal method to update.

It sounds like some of your configuration files didn't get properly updated, so it may be as simple as running etc-update or dispatch-conf. On the other hand, you may have to update some things, as well. Let me (us) know if you run into trouble, and we'll do our best to help.

I have some difficulty to do this at the moment .... I can't stop the computer for now ...

But, I was able to acces root, typing su, and after the error message, I do ctrl-c. I get root acces :)

So, I do an emerge sync, udating portage and udev, and finaly, I run dispatch-conf, and alll work well now :)

Thx for ur help

Glad you got it figured out. Please add "[SOLVED]" to the subject of your first post so that others know there's a solution here.
