Hi there.
I know that ATI makes some propriatary drivers and a configuration screen for their video cards. Also, there is the OSS (Open Source Software) ones. Which is more effective? Im not crazy enough about freedom to shun something propritary. I just want to know, which gives more features and which is generally better? _________________ iMac G4 1GHz :: q6600 //2x 500GB//2GB RAM//8600GT//Gentoo :: MacBook Pro//2.53GHz |

From what I've heard, you can only get the maximum OpenGL 3D output from the proprietary drivers. |

Please forgive my stupidity, but whats that? Not 3D acceleration, right? _________________ iMac G4 1GHz :: q6600 //2x 500GB//2GB RAM//8600GT//Gentoo :: MacBook Pro//2.53GHz |

Alrighty. No problem. I just was wondering because I was looking at the ATI site, and when I selected 'notebooks with ATI cards' (under the Linux category of course), it sent me to a Windows 2000 site. :S _________________ iMac G4 1GHz :: q6600 //2x 500GB//2GB RAM//8600GT//Gentoo :: MacBook Pro//2.53GHz |

the ATI drivers will give you the best hope of hardware rendered opengl. But alas the ATI drivers may suck even then, by that I mena the performence you expect from your respective card is not there |

What the heck is OSS? I've seen your posts before. They are different.
oss is the Open Sound System. NOT Open Source Software.
Are you like, eight years old? Or are you Bill Gates? There's something VERY wrong with your posts. |

The fglrx drivers DO work for mobility cards as well. I'm not sure if it's in the readme, but they work. They may not be 'officially' supported though. |

I have a laptop with a ATI Mobility Radeon 9000.
I'm using the open source driver which comes with xorg.
Its working perfectly, even the 3D acceleration. |
