I dunno exactly where to post this, sorry...
I just (successfully) upgraded my kernel to 2.4.20-gentoo-r1, and I noticed that the CPU usage for X pegs to about 20~30% average, which is MUCH worse than it was before (close to 0% originally, IIRC). Is this a problem with the gentoo-sources kernel or X? I should mention that X wasn't originally compiled with gcc-3.2.1-r6, whereas the new kernel is... should I recompile X? Any hints/suggestions/similarities? Let me know, thanks!
Edit: I should add that I'm using ~x86 unstable, on a dual processor Athlon-MP, with CFLAGS="-march=athlon-mp -mmmx -msse -m3dnow -O3 -pipe" (was Gentoo-1.4_rc1, but I've been emerge world'ing along the way... ) _________________ McManus

Moved to OTG.
This can be an issue with some option or new patch in this kernel. _________________ "I'm just very selective about the reality I choose to accept." -- Calvin |

gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r1 was recenlty marked stable, and I upgraded to it last night. I noticed an increase in cpu usage too. Both X and kdeinit are each taking about 10% of my 900Mhz Athlon t-bird's cpu time. |

By using top on a different vt I determined the high CPU usage only occurred when logged into kde. Gnome or just the kdm login screen didn't cause high CPU usage. I created another user account, and log into kde with it, and discovered the CPU usage was normal for that account.
I deleted all the .kde* stuff from my home directory, and now X is using 2-3 percent CPU usage in kde.
I'm left with a default kde setup now though, so maybe someone wants to figure out a less barbaric why to straighten out kde. |

anyone figure this out? I'm also having a similar issue -- though I can't say if kde definitely causes it. |

I'm running KDE on dual Athlon-MP 1.2 GHz with 2.4.20-gentoo-r1, and I experience the same consistently higher (both system and user) CPU counts while X is running. It seems that while certain programs are running, this effect is increased. Fire up gkrellm and watch your percentages go up with tools like "knewsticker" and the like. I bet this isn't a kernel thing; it's more likely KDE reacting to it somehow... I suggest looking there, first.
If I'm right... well, go figure. |
