Hi all,
when I want to get root or change to a different user with 'su' my password isn't accepted (su: Authentication failure).
Of course, my user is member of the wheel-group and the suid-flag is set correctly like the FAQ and many other threads say:
Code: |
ls -l /bin/su
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root ........
|
/var/log/messages gives the following error:
Code: |
unix_chkpwd: check pass; user unknown
su(pam_unix): authentication failure; logname= uid=65 euid=65 tty=pts/4 ruser=chris rhost= user=root
su: pam_authenticate: Authentication failure
|
I've tried to get su working by reemerging pam, but this also didn't solve the problem.
su stopped working, because I stupidly wanted to update my system with 'emerge system'.
Thank you for your advice

Can you login as root at all? If you cannot than it is more than likely a /etc/passwd problem. If you can login as root but just not as su than reply and I will seek further.
