|
|
I recently upgraded to 2.4.22-gentoo-r2, everything seemed fine, but just a while ago, the X server restarted, just like that. I was only browsing one of the topics here
I dont know where to get an error log to find out where the mistake is occuring and neither do I know how to fix this.
I used the same kernel config as I did for hte 2.4.20-gentoo-r7 kernel (I did not use oldconfig, I manually reconfigured the new one with menuconfig) and I recompiled nvidia-kernel
Does anyone know what can be done about this? |

check /var/log/XFree86.0.log at the end there might be a clue...
If it's not too long you could post it. _________________ Tom Wesley |

You could also check /var/log/everything/current or dmesg... there might be something in there if its a kernel/driver problem... _________________ if only I could fill my heart with love... |

things have gotten even worse :s
xmms regularly exits when playing a track without even dropping an error message in the console.
I just recompiled (only) kdebase with --enable-debug=full to find out what is hurting kdevelop3.0.0b2 but now konqueror shows up with a "red" title bar and a super small font in the adress bar and freezes regularly
whats happening to my system???
hmm, shouldnt have done that though, should have added this to kdevelop instead of kdebase, now I can reinstall kde completely.
But, I was wondering, does X need to be recompiled when going from 2.4.20 to 2.4.22 ? |

I rebuilded everything and X still crashed, multilple times a day now.
no errormessage or whatsoever, just simply as if someone pressed the "restart X Server" button
First I trhought it was hte acpi that was enabled, so I turned that off and recompiled the kernel, but no effect |

When you installed the new kernel did you use genkernel, or use the same configuration as the previous one (what version was that?)
I personally would recommend trying gentoo-dev-sources as these are 2.6.0-r1 (at the moment anyway...) and may solve you problems. If you don't want to try that then you could try vanilla-source-2.4.23.
Other than that, it sounds like it's possibly sever optimisations (what are your cflags?) or some hardware problem. If you have multiple RAM sticks it might be worth removing all but one, if the crashes continue swap it for another - one of them might be faulty.
Hope that gives you a few ideas... _________________ Tom Wesley |

previous kernel: 2.4.20-gentoo-r7
new kernel config:
make menuconfig
(entered everything by hand, printed the previous one on paper)
ram module: 1 stick of 512 ddr ram from mtec (sp?)
and it is quite new, tested severely with memtest.
If I have some more time I will try a 2.6 kernel.
However for the moment I am going to recompile this 2.4.22-r2 without APM or ACPI at all. only the general power managment.
if this doesnt work, then I will upgrade |

I have had a problem using ACPI/APM on a machine and ended up removing it completely from the kernel. As you are rebuilding you might like to copy the .config file from the previous kernel into the new try, type make oldconfig and give that a shot, in case you made a typo. _________________ Tom Wesley |
