i can use my keyboard and mouse fine in my linux native OS .. i'm launching the guest OS, WinXP from a physical HDD

i'm able to use the keyboard in the bios area when vmware is launched and also to select WinXP from the grub menu, but as soon as windows comes to the login screen i cant use the keyboard/mouse

No. This has nothing to do with the keyboard / mouse either...

I am not sure what exactly is causing your problem here as I don't have any problems with xp clients on gentoo or gentoo clients on windows and I have like 20 systems installed with vmware server.

Do you have the VMWare Tools installed in the guest?

You will often have problems "seeing" the mouse cursor in a VM if you don't have the vmware-tools installed and acceleration enabled. This is especially true when running GSX Server.

Seconded on installing vmware-tools. In VMWare Workstation 5 (I didn't see which version/type you're trying to use), its in the VM menu. The guest will act like a CD was inserted.

Have you seen if it still happens if you maximize the VM at boot (<ctrl>+<alt>+<enter>)? I used to have similar problems with a (non-virtual) Windows XP box connected by KVM. Windows sometimes wouldn't recognize the keyboard and mouse if I switched away from it in the middle of its boot sequence. My Linux install, though, worked no matter how often I did it

That would most likely be because you were using PS/2 connected devices which poll and need to be present when booting.

This is not the case with a VMWare booted VM as it can boot without the console being connected to that particular VM.
